September 1

September...new school supplies and cooler breezes that promise that Fall is coming. I was looking for something great, funny, enlightening, or otherwise read-worthy, but here's a poem. Since I like poetry, it works for me, but my loyal readers may be disappointed. (Mary, I give you permission to stop reading.)

The breezes taste
Of apple peel.
The air is full
Of smells to feel-
Ripe fruit, old footballs,
Burning brush,
New books, erasers,
Chalk, and such.
The bee, his hive,
Well-honeyed hum,
And Mother cuts
Chrysanthemums.
Like plates washed clean
With suds, the days
Are polished with
A morning haze.
- September, John Updike

Now Cheryl, you only think you know my poetry likes and dislikes. This one is fine; it's short and it rhymes! And it is not so ethereal and philosophical that I don't get it. I completely understand Fall.
