KP duty

KP duty, or kitchen police duty, brings to mind the image of peeling potatoes in the mess hall, frequently assigned as punishment (at least in movies about the military and we all know those are true). I did manage to make a meal, a successful meal, without the help of the Colonel. About midnight Saturday night, I was really re-thinking the whole "make this meal just to prove that I can" idea. I had already peeled apples to make one of the world's easiest desserts, apple dumplings. And then...the potatoes. Why midnight? Poor planning on my part. Still, I peeled half of a 5-lb. bag of potatoes. I put them, some carrots, and a roast in the crock pot, and then I went to bed. Sunday morning I became obsessed with those potatoes and decided we needed different potatoes. So I peeled the rest of the 5-lb. bag and made mashed potatoes.

I'm lucky to still have all 10 fingers.
I am not a good peeler.

Still, I managed to buy and make a roast, peel and make mashed potatoes, and got a meal of roast, green beans, mashed potatoes, corn, and bread done. All at once. On time. And I still have all 10 fingers. And everyone loved it. 2 days of cooking and cleaning for 2 hours of celebration. Great.
Next time, I'm definitely going for the bucket.

What? You had a whole mess of southern family members in and didn't fry up a pan of potatoes (too)?
