Why this will never be a cooking blog...

I hope all of you had a happy turkey day. I'm still feeling the effects of massive amounts of mac and cheese so I'm doing well today. I escaped most of the cooking burden...the only requested item: pink cake. Yes, that's pink cake from a box, frosting from a can. My aunt has a good estimate of my cooking skills (probably on par with my literary merit). And because I have a sister-in-law that does not eat desserts (had to be an in-law although my brother is sorta quirky in the same way), I decided to attack the other sweet she eats: peanut butter fudge. My old nemesis. Thanksgiving was also her birthday celebration so my plan was to make a small box just for her.

And I did it. Of course, every first time I do this lacks a little in execution. I decided to go hardcore this year and operated without a candy thermometer. It really hasn't helped me in the past. I've discovered the proper pan and can remember the feeling of my properly seared forearm which indicates that I've reached "soft ball" stage.

So I just did that all over again. Apparently I proceeded past "soft ball" into "hard as a brick bat" but that's not really the end of the world. And then I forgot one sorta important step...the beating at lukewarm. So my peanut butter fudge is a little crisp (breaks instead of cuts) and a little spiky, but edible.

And the next one will be better. I'm just certain.

It's peanut butter brittle! I think you should cook this more than once a year so you can show it who's boss.
