The highlights

OK, I just have to say this: I need to get a life. I get it. You probably knew that already. The most exciting thing to happen to me this week is a small filling. I went it for a cleaning, came out with a cavity, returned the very next day expecting the worst and walked out with one million shots but a small filling. Success. I am alarmed by the fact that this makes a blog post. And also by the fact that there is an actual Play Doh dentist set. Why?

Dentist-chair conversations are just the best, aren't they? I'm sure I had a freaked out look on my face because I was on the verge of total freak out yesterday while I waited (to understand that, you'd have to hear a long boring story about my tooth challenges and nobody wants that. I don't want it either.) and so the nervous chatter started. Hers. Not mine. My mouth was otherwise occupied. I think I was on the second round of numbing shots when Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" came on the radio playing in the office (and it samples "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Werewolves of London" if you've never heard it. And one of those is by Lynrd Skynrd. And if you don't know those songs, I can't help you. Come back tomorrow). I like that this office listens to a local station, but that's just a side note. Anyway, the assistant-type person says, "They must play that song three times a day. And I don't like it. He just ripped off Lynrd Skynrd. I mean, HE wrote original music and then Kid Rock just copied it."

And it's a good thing my mouth was occupied. What I said in my head was "You're kidding right? I mean, you know that Lynrd Skynrd is not a 'he'. Right?" I didn't say that. And then she said, "I mean, if I still lived in Birmingham, I might be singing about hanging out at the lake and..." and I stopped listening after that. I started to worry about my teeth at that point. Someone who lived in Birmingham (where they love the governor...boo, boo, boo) and doesn't know that Lynrd Skynrd is a "they" or maybe an "it" but not really a "he"...my mind was boggled.

Turns out, she isn't the only one. In fact, I may even be the minority. So I'm doing my duty as the local music expert to share my nutshell version...Lynrd Skynrd is a band, their kind of music is called "southern rock", it's a band with a tragic history (Plane crash? Lead singer and other members died?), "Sweet Home Alabama", "What's Your Name?", and another little song called "Free Bird" were some hits that I can name (and sing some) immediately.

I can't name all the presidents in order or all the state capitals. I can't find my badge to get into work and I'll soon forget my password and lock myself out. I can't clean your teeth to within an inch of your life or cook dinner without setting off the fire alarm. I don't do math, science, or anything requiring fine motor skills or mechanical ability. Popular music I can do, especially if it's from the last four decades and has words that you can sing along. Stay tuned for my next exposition tentatively titled "Hootie isn't a 'He' Either".

LOL!!! Amazing what people think - especially with so many covers and sampling going on... I am not musically astute - but even I knew most of this....

WEll.... technically Lynyrd Skynyrd was a he as well. The band named themselves after a despised gym teacher named Leonard Skinner who made a point of saying "it's Pronounced Lynyrd Skynyrd". Hence the first album title as well. But yeah, the original "he" in question woulnd't have written the song in question.

I can't stand Kid Rock either. And I loved that PlayDoh dentist set as a kid!!
